“Having come from a disadvantaged background and being faced with many obstacles and barriers, I never believed I could ever achieve a University degree. LWTT has given me an amazing opportunity to break down many of the barriers I had previously faced and helped me to realize the great potential that I had within me. I feel that LWTT has a unique way of teaching and really responds to my needs and aspirations. By actually using a real ‘person centred approach’, it helped us to understand the true importance of using such an approach in the work that we do. LWTT has shown me how to best use my own experiences, personal, professional and theoretical within my own practice as a good community worker. My confidence has been boosted from this course and I have learned so much which I am able use in my practice. It is also extremely beneficial in terms of being a debt free student and earning a decent living while working towards a degree. The support from LWTT is indescribable. For the first time, I had people who believed in me and refused to let me give up. I was surrounded by encouragement, support, guidance, faith and quite often even a shoulder to cry on. ”

“Being on the LWTT degree course has not only changed my life in relation to developing a new career path but it has also given me a whole new outlook on life. I think about things very differently and I now view things from all perspectives before making decisions. I have grown in confidence and learned to value my own thoughts and opinions as well as acknowledging the views and opinions of others. It would never have entered my mind to go to university and get a degree and had it not been for the support and encouragement that LWTT staff gave me I wouldn’t be where I am now”.
Lorna Fraser, Graduate
“The Community learning and development course I have undertaken via LWTT has been one of the most positive choices of my life. Being educated in an environment where support from the tutors, and staff at LWTT was key to my learning has provided me with the necessary tools required to be a productive community worker. Over the past three years I have seen my own confidence reach high levels, this has enabled me to challenge some of the issues communities face on a day to day basis constructively. Most importantly this course has opened up doors for me which without the degree would never have been open. I feel I have been educated in how to learn and change for the better”.
Seema Arshad, Graduate
“The Course is challenging mentally, emotionally and professionally. Lectures and researching essay topics lead to a clearer understanding of Community Development practice and the impact of structural inequality on people and communities. I have a new confidence in my skills and abilities as a worker and have come enjoy public speaking as a result of presenting my learning to my peers. This would not have been possible without the experience, expertise, support and encouragement of Tutors and support staff. LWTT’s person centred approach to training and learning has helped me to grow and mature as a student. In contrast to my earlier learning experience LWTT has encouraged me to break down barriers and to achieve my potential. If I achieve any success it is as a direct consequence of this input”.

“The gaining of my Community Education and Development degree has allowed me to link my previous and current practice with the theory of a community development approach and gave me further insight into best practice. I have absolutely no doubt that I would not be in the employment position I now find myself in or earning the salary that I am currently had it not been for my participation on the course. However, even more importantly I also feel that the skills and training that I gained due to my participation on the programme has ensured that wherever I work I “do a good job” and support local people to participate fully both locally and nationally which in turn has assisted them in achieving positive outcomes in their areas”.
Fiona Speirs, Graduate
“LWTT has given me the opportunity to study for a degree. This has always been denied to me before because of my work commitments. I think my age would have been a barrier to my learning because I would not have had the confidence or opportunity to enter into higher education if it was not for the support and guidance LWTT is giving me. This degree course is opening doors to new opportunities for me, taking me to new heights of knowledge and development. This is an opportunity I would highly recommend and I am grateful for this chance of a lifetime”.
